Marketing to newsgroups (usenet, electronic bulletin boards, etc.) can be a profitable, low cost and effective method of promotion for your business. It can also be a great way of gaining feedback on your products and services and any new ideas you have.
Reaching your target audience (customers) is the key to marketing on the Internet. As there are many newsgroups available you will almost certainly find one, or probably more, related to your business products and services. The first step is to find the most appropriate newsgroups, you can use search engines to perform this task, think about what your product is, who uses it and search for these newsgroups.
Although these people may be discussing problems to which you have a potential solution, it's not a good idea to start blatantly advertising as this is looked down upon. In the offline world this can be akin to jumping in the middle of a group of people chatting and shouting about your products. Before posting to a newsgroup, lurk and read other posts before posting a message, try and answer others posts with helpful information. The idea is to help people and gain their trust, if you can do this it is more likely they will become your customer. If you do mention your product in anyway, be very subtle and do not get off the subject being discussed and do not send messages to multiple groups.
Include a short brief signature on your posts which markets your business, make sure your website address is displayed, but ensure the signature is short and is not the focus of your message otherwise people may consider it to be too blatant.
